At this point, the Lord of the Eagles, along with his retinue snatch the prisoners from the tree tops and fly away to their nests, high above the mountains. The group hastily climb trees to save themselves, but the goblins set fire around them. They travel for a short time before getting surrounded by wolves and the goblins. Chapter 6: Out of the Frying-pan into the Fire Summary:Īfter escaping the goblins and Gollum, Bilbo meets the dwarves and Gandalf. Finally, he escapes the mountains and goes outside. Bilbo accidentally wears the ring and discovers its powers. He suspects Bilbo and starts to chase him. If Bilbo wins, Gollum should show him out and if Gollum wins, he gets to eat Bilbo.Īt the end, Bilbo wins and also Gollum discovers that he has lost his precious ring. Bilbo needs Gollum to show his way out, but Gollum refuses and so they decide to solve the fix by a game of riddle. But Bilbo has an elvish dagger about him which stops Gollum from getting his prey. Gollum sees Bilbo and starts to row towards him in the hope of eating him. In the middle of this lake is a small rocky island where Gollum lives. As he stumbles along he discovers an underwater lake. As he gropes around hoping to find his way out he comes across the ring and pockets it without thinking. Summary:īilbo is lost in the dark passages of the mountain. This chapter is the turning point of this story, as this is where Bilbo discovers The Ring and also meets the ring's original owner, Gollum. They run through many dark passages, but Dori gets grabbed from behind and Bilbo who was being carried by Dori rolls off his shoulders, bumps his head and remembers nothing more. At that moment, the lights go out and out of nowhere Gandalf jumps into the fray, kills the Great Goblin and escapes with the dwarves and the hobbit. The dwarves and the hobbit are chained and taken to their leader, the Great Goblin. They take shelter in a dry cave and as they sleep a crack develops at the back of the cave and goblins enter and abduct the gang, barring Gandalf. There they are caught between two storms, and the stone giants fighting each other. Chapter 4: Over Hill and Under Hill Summary:Īfter leaving the Last Homely House the group travels through the mountains climbing up all the time. The Swords were made in a place called Gondolin for the Goblin wars.ĭurin is the father of fathers of the eldest race of dwarves, the Longbeards. This vast expanse of land slopes up to meet the foot of the Misty Mountain range. The house is located in the fair valley of Rivendell and Rivendell itself lies hidden in a vast ground with no trees, valleys or hills. The group takes a short rest at the house of Elrond which is aptly called the Last Homely House as it is indeed the last house in that area after which the Misty Mountains begin. After this the dwarves, Gandalf, and Bilbo visit the cave of the trolls where they find a hoard of treasure, precious swords and importantly, a supply of food. Soon the sun rises and the trolls are turned into stone. The trolls imprison the group, barring Gandalf, who later deceives the trolls into fighting amongst themselves. Summary: As the group begin their quest, they travel through a forest where they meet three rolls. In the process of occupying the Mountain, Smaug had destroyed Dale. But this was until the invasion of the dragon Smaug. There trade flourished between men and dwarves. Dale, under the shadow of the Mountain, was a town that had been built by mortal men. The Mountain (or the Lonely Mountain as we'll come to know later) is the place where the dwarves during the time of Thror, Thorin's grandfather, were driven from the North. Old Took's great grand uncle was Bullroarer who had charged the ranks of the goblins of Mount Gram in the Battle of the Green Fields. His mother is Belladonna Took, daughter of Old Took who had lived across The Water. Bilbo is offered a chance to accompany and help the dwarves.īilbo Baggins lives in a hole called Bag-End in the Hill. There, a plan for the quest – to find the treasure and kill the dragon that guards it– is laid out. Gandalf meets Bilbo at his house and summons the dwarves for tea without Bilbo's consent.
